I've just read a fascinating book by Matthew Vadum, an American investigative journalist. It's called Subversion, Inc. and it is a detailed and thoroughly researched look at ACORN, the organization (the pressure or rather, intimidation group) that became known to most people during the 2008 election, but which has been active for considerably longer. Vadum goes so far as to call ACORN a "violent criminal organization" which may seem extreme, but whatever your politics, there is no denying that every bit of information in this book is sourced and corroborated and worth taking very seriously. The book traces ACORN's Alinskyesque roots to its influence on and support for the ambitions of Barack Obama, who launched his political career with a 1996 fundraiser in the home of Bill Ayers.

Don't be daunted by Subversion Inc.'s length -- 436 pages -- as it is well-written, highly readable and engaging. The subtitle is "How Obama's Red Shirts are Still Terrorizing and Ripping off American Taxpayers," and yet this book shows us that not only has ACORN not disappeared from the American political scene (various members of ACORN are active in similar splinter groups), but is also active in Canada. This book is necessary reading for American voters who wish to make an educated decision in 2012, and for students of politics in any country where the power of a single vote is taken for granted.
