A memorial for Christopher Hitchens omits much of what he believed, largely in order to not cause discomfort to the leftist attendees, who would prefer not to think about the fact that he supported an American-led war. Of course, many on the left would be fine with supporting a Hezbollah or Hamas or Iranian-led war. (I've got relatives who would cheerlead for such a thing.)

My boyfriend and I were talking about this in regards Salman Rushdie's recent tribute to Hitchens in Vanity Fair. In the article, Rushdie hints -- and it's quite sleazy -- that in the last year of his life Hitchens repented from his support for the war in Iraq. He doesn't have the balls to actually say it in so many words, as that would require evidence. So he sort of hints at it, knowing a dead man can't correct him.

So, so dishonest.
