Apparently, Nelson Mandela was so furious with Tony Blair's decision to invade Iraq that "he launched a fiery tirade against him in a phone call to a Cabinet minister, it emerged today."

I have two questions. First, who appointed Mandela judge and jury? Second, why is Mandela so fond of dictators? Surely someone with his experience should have been thrilled to see Saddam taken out.

Odd.

This is interesting as was Mandela’s vociferous opposition to the Iraq War. He was very much in favour of the post 9/11 action in Afghanistan. South African troops had been deployed in Lesotho in 1998 without a UN resolution. In late 2001 he was hosted at the White House and in July 2002, George Bush awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

All of this made his outspoken and one-sided condemnation of the Iraq War seem a bit odd. He even suggested Bush and Blair were racists for not obeying Kofi Annan. I’ve always wondered if he was being genuine or merely emoting at the behest of the ANC comrades. It was noticeable that South Africa began to publicly turn its back on America and the West at that point and embrace new partners, like Iran.
